In 1980 graduated the Faculty of Agricultural Mechanisation, N.P. Ogarev Mordovia State University; in 1993 finished the graduate school of the Russian Academy of Management.

The beginning of his service record dates back to 1980 when he started as an engineer at the Chair of Agricultural Machinery, N.P. Ogarev Mordovia State University.

In 1981 Sergey M. Vdovin held the position of an assistant lecturer at the Chair of Descriptive Geometry and Drawing.

In 80-ies of the last century he occupied various positions dealing with supervision of young communist leaders: in 1982 – instructor of the Mordovian Regional Committee of Komsomol, in 1983 – the first secretary of Insar Regional Committee of Komsomol, in 1985 – the head of department, the second secretary of the Regional Committee of Komsomol, in 1986 – the first secretary of the Mordovian Regional Committee of Komsomol. In 1989 – the inspector of the Mordovian Regional Committee of CPSU.

From 1991 to 1993 – a graduate student of the Russian Academy of Management.

In 1993 – the head of working group on establishing "Ural Bank of Foreign Trade" filiation in Saransk.

In 1994 – the Rector’s assistant in N.P. Ogarev Mordovia State University. At the same year served for the Presidential Office in the Republic of Mordovia in the capacity of an expert.

In 1995 – the Minister of Labour and Employment of the Republic of Mordovia.

In 1997 during 1 year he held the post of an Adviser to the Head of the Republic of Mordovia.

In 1998 appointed the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Mordovia for Science and New Technologies.

In 2000 – the Deputy Prime Minister – the Financial Minister of the Republic of Mordovia. At that time Sergey M. Vdovin was a co-author of the republican development programmes.

In 1994 resumed teaching: from 1994 to 1997 – lecturer at the Chair of Management, from 1997 to 1999 – seniour lecturer at the Chair of Economic History and Information Technology, since 2006 – an adjunct professor of the Chair of Economics and Logistics in N.P. Ogarev Mordovia State University. Since 2010 - professor of the Chair of Management.

Honours:

In 1990 – a commendation from the Presidium of the Republican Supreme Council of former Mordovian Autonomous Socialist Republic for contribution into the development of the Republic of Mordovia. In 2009 – a commendation from the Government of the Republic of Mordovia for contribution into the development of the Republic. In 2002 – a medal for contribution into the organisation of the National Census. In 2004 – a medal for contribution into the Republican social&labour sphere. In 2008 was awarded the title of the Honored Economist of the Republic of Mordovia. In 2012 – a medal for contribution into the organisation of the 2012 National Census. In 2012 – a medal in recognition of services. In commemoration of the 1000th anniversary celebrating the Mordovian people’s unity with peoples of Russia. In 2013 – a medal in recognition of cooperation with drug enforcement agencies.
