The encourangement of mobility has recently become a key aspect of the EU educational policy caused by the necessity to provide two main dimensions of the internal market such as freedom of the people’s and knowledge movement. The article examines the problem of the geographical mobility in the EU over the past decades. Two aspects of the geographical mobility are discussed: the academic mobility and migration from developing countries. The article also describes characteristics of both types of mobility and their underlying causes. Socio-economic problems and global changes have caused the necessity to rethink the approaches to the organisation and realisation of the EU mobility and formation of a new mobility culture. The author analyses the adopted by the EU legal acts and documents in this sphere, and the EU level initiatives and outcomes.

Keywords: mobility; education policy; immigration; integration.
